Starbucks launches its first ready-to-drink beverage outside of North America

Starbucks Discoveries coffee drink is a fresh, ready-to-drink chilled cup coffee which will be offered in two flavors, Seattle (latte) and Milano (espresso). It went on sale Tuesday in convenience stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Any Starbucks Gossip readers from Japan care to review it? (Japan Today)

I haven't tried this one but it should do well. There are several other brands with similar products such as Mount Rainier (Liv Tyler, Natalie Portman, and Jodie Foster have done their TV commercials).

How about a non-dairy ready-to-drink in the U.S.? I'd sure buy plenty of any Americano-style chilled drinks, if they were available in my local convenience stores. I can't stand the milky Frappacinos or whatever that misleadingly-designed can is (why is the can black and deep brown?!!!).

But I know that I'm in a minority. Can any Barista's give me an idea of what the ratio of dairy (latte, mocha, etc.) to straight-up coffee or tea drinks is? Nine in ten, perhaps? Is there a market for a milkless beverage?

You will think I am biased, but I do live in Tokyo and did take a look at the new Starbucks drink yesterday (when they first started selling it). Personally I love the ready-to-drink lattes from Tully's. But the new Starbucks got me interested. Unfortunately it is 210 yen!! The Tully's is only 176 yen. Even a cheap can of coffee is only 100-120 yen. It is really expensive for what it is. I didn't even buy one. Sorry. But I can't support blatant over-pricing.

I can't help but point out that Tully't has been selling these things in Japan for years, and now, FINALLY Starbucks starts selling them. RIP-OFF! (in more way than one ;)

Oh, I remember Tully's. That's the company that can't go public because it's fearful of shareholders ditching the current management. The company that tried to compete with Starbucks by having more! of! everything! in their stores... and ended up having more! waste! at the end of the day. The company that's finding out most people's reaction is "Meh, whatever. We already have a chain coffee store on this block called Starbucks. Not interested."

Hey Anonymous: I think Tully's Fan's point, actually, was that cost could be a factor in whether it sells initially. If people never decide to pay more, try it, and feel it's worth the price, then it affects whether the product succeeds in that market.

Or did you mean it doesn't matter since Tully's Fan won't be buying it anyway?

While looking online for information on the Starbucks Doubleshot, I found a slightly disturbing advertising site featuring a cubicle of a guy named Hank, with interactive doo-dads on the desk (you can hear his messages, toss pencils at the ceiling, erase his white board). I also found information on this ad for the Doubleshot, featuring the band Survivor singing a parody of Eye of the Tiger to a guy named Glen. It's kind of cute. According to that TV advertising blog (people blog about anything, don't they?), the spot was nominated for some kind of a TV Emmy.

I'm a Candian living in Taiwan and I've tried the new Starbucks drinks. They're o.k. but nothing special. The stores carry many different ready-made coffee drinks and the Starbucks ones taste the same but are twice the price. I think I'll stick with my Starbucks coffee shop and not bother with the 7-11 Starbucks.

I am medium height, have big beautiful blue eyes and pretty dark hair. I think i'd be greaaaat for this job since i am such a fan of the starbucks coffee. I almost go their every day.
