Maybe they are just trying to be inclusive. After all, there are many Christians in the U.S. and elsewhere. Instead of excluding any quote that references God, maybe they wanted to include it and include all the Christians who would appreciate it. If they are looking for different opinions, at least one quote should include the belief in God. I for one think it is very inspirational, and not just because I'm a Christian.

Not printing a religious qoute does not strike me as being exclusive. I think they are just trying to appeal to Christians who were up in arms about the gay quote. It's interesting that this is looked at as somehow in opposition to the Maupin qoute as well. Sure, a lot of Christians would think so, but not all. Whatever. I just hope they realize they can't please everyone.

Quote are words. It does not change the recipe on how we make the drink. The quotes don't even change the taste of the drink. I say dust if off your shoulders and worry about more important things like your family.

Sorry, but how can anyone not see this as an attempt to tame the conservatives, and there potential boycott? Oh, and there's nothing wrong with my family, so please, worry about your own. This is a comment sections, is it not? I'm commenting. Just like you.

I think that God Quotes are nice, being a Christian too, a book called: Living For The Mornings" Collective Best of Coffee Poems, was written for the Coffee DieHards that maybe wanted every day language for a lift and a laugh! So as to not offend the not so religious, they can then get a lift and a laugh! I think that this post is cool!

I will come back to visit here! Check out
Blogger.com and search the one called "Coffee Cups," you will experience smooth writing and a lift for life!

Happy ventures to Starbucks...I've been ther and done that...Starbucks has a nice atmosphere too!
Flogblog

Flo G

You mean to tell me that Starbucks has a Barnes and Noble's bookstore also? How nice. Look for "Living For The Mornings! Coffee Poems from the from to the back, it's at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore (bn.com) and on Amazon.com or request it...it works with coffee diehards. It's a real coffee handbook of laughs and words of wisdom. It has such a variety for life and the office or home! It's needed as also coffee is needed! No rhymes, really... just plain every day language...for a lift and a laugh...

Nice visiting here! Flo

NotGod

Ok, this isn't a "God quote." It's an American evangelist quote.

The quote is by an best-selling author who also founded a Southern Baptist mega-church.

So in my book, he's a modern-day carnival barker.

Brittany

I think that Starbuck's putting a "God quote" (as they call it) on their cups is a great idea, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Christian. When people need a lift, most drink coffee, right? So why not add something inspirational to their coffee cup so they get that boost from coffee and they get something inspiring to make their day positive?

Partner 113XXX0

Why does everyone seem to miss the point of this completely?

This isn't designed to offend conservatives by putting gay quotes or make it up by putting god quotes, it's merely designed to start conversation!

Starbucks posts an invitation, this guy accepted it so now his quote is on a cup. They didn't seek out a god quote nor did they seek out a gay quote. They merely used a quote that was short and provocative enough while not being too deep to fulfill it's role as nothing more than a conversation starter on the side of a cup.

That's it, that's all...there really isn't anymore to it than that. People are always trying to find deeper meaning, even when it doesn't exist!

Jerry

I didn't realize until I read all these comments that Christians and political conservatives held exclusive rights to God.

smartypants

Um, I believe the idea behind ALL of the quotes on cups is that they will be "inspirational." I haven't seen all of the cups, but the ones I have seen were thought-provoking, no matter who the quote came from. The word "inspirational" isn't limited to things that are Christian-friendly.

L

I received "Purpose-Driven Life" from a very religious associate as a gift. Myself, I'm a lapsed-Catholic/part time Episcopalian, and a confirmed lefty (I don't know if that helps classify me.) But from what I read, I thought that the book had a really wonderful message of reflection, and guidance. It doesn't bother me that Starbucks has included a "god" quote. After all, I would hope that those of us on the liberal side could show acceptance towards everyone, including followers of organized Christian religion. It is a little dorky that this is coming right on the heels of the Baylor incident, though.

Bob Weber

I just sent an email from the Starbucks web site complaining about mixing Christian or any religious sayings with business. I find Starbuck's actions in this matter offensive and inappropriate since it can easily be construed as a publicly traded corporation propagandizing on behalf of a particular religion. They should know better. :-((

Nikki

I think its rather stupid to mix religion with business-- you can't please everyone and its always going to upset someone, so I think they should have just left well enough alone or put statistics on the cup-- not quotes, if they wanted to bolster conversation.

Holden McCrank

A god quote on a Starbucks cup? How about something like:

"Jesus H. Christ! Four dollars for a friggin' coffe???"

A cup of friggin' coffee, genius, costs $1.95 with tax for the biggest one you can buy. The five buck range is for venti espresso drinks with extra stuff in them. Get your facts straight and get a hold on something besides your crank.

Boston Starbucks Rebel

I really don't like this guy. He doesn't teach true Christianity or the faith we have revealed. Being a Christian Catholic, I find that he is simply trying to squeeze even more money out of believers. He offers a feel good religion, devoid of actual commitment to a radical conversion of self to God. I think that his quote on the cup is a cheap shot at trying to promote the sale of his personal own philosophy. If they are to put a God quote on the cup how about one from Mother Teresa, "I am not called to be successful but to be faithful." It is an inspirational quote, but on a much deeper level. After all she is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and helped the poorest of the poor in areas of the world so deprived of charity. Also, being faithful can mean perserving even in hard situations. Also trying to gain success in life can be superficial, leaving the inner person empty and loss. In this busy world, I believe that the human person does not reflect enough and that quotes on cups should offer a few minutes for inner reflection.

Lauren

Keep in mind after all this there was a quote about monkeys deserving rights because they have society (language, thoughts, coping skills, etc). It was satirical. Starbucks used to be a very left foot forward company and that's still true (just a bit less so as of late).

The other thing I'd keep in mind is that prices are different all over the US (Colorado districts are $3.15 for a standard latte, in Florida districts it's over $4.50). Any economist can see, though, that with the high cost in milk prices that they (we) don't make their (our) money from single drinks but rather the fact that we have a large enough profit percentage for the mass of them.

Also, congrats on the New York Times mention!

Patrick

I just think that the article in the October 23rd New York Times puts it into perspective and should be read by anyone that has a strong opinion about this topic. Also I think its sad that people don't have anything more important going on in their lives so all they do is complain about something like this. If you don't like it than don't read or talk about it. Just try to be positive and make the world a better and easier place to be a part of. I am not a religious person at all and I am totally ok with Starbucks putting the quote on the cup. After all, freedom of speech still exists, and not only should it exist for every individual it should also exist for any business or group of people as well.

vdoprincess

Patrick-
Thank you. Freedom of speech does still exist, most of the time, and if a business wants to put a religious quote on their cup, they have the right. And as a consumer, you have the right to be offended and boycott if you want. Same with "gay" quotes. Honestly-it's just a quote, people. Yes, it's reflective of a lifestyle, but I think the point is to cause discussion. In which cause it seems to have succeeded!

Boston Starbucks Rebel

Can't we all just get along?

Steve

Starbucks does a great job of creating debates and coversations. We have seen this happen through previous quotes. The quote by Rick Warren, which ever quote it may be, will add to the debating flavor that we all desire. I can't wait to discuss what Warren has to say about the mystery of life.

Paul

I do think that the purpose of the cups is to provoke thought; and, that being said, it doesn't even matter that the message on the infamous "gay cup" and the infamous "god quote cup" contradict one another.

The first one has the message of "be true to yourself." The second one is stating to quit being so egocentric and "be true to God." Those are contradictory, but they do offer a diverse spectrum of beliefs. And I guess that's the whole purpose behind the "The Way I See It" campaign.

It's dangerous ground for Starbucks to tread, though-- usually when you try to satisfy everyone, you piss everyone off.

why does this crazy country feel that religion should be on and around everything.....buy a bible, although I am sure you have one if you want those quotes, the up lifting non-religious quotes that Starbucks currently has are great....stop reinforcing the fact that this country is turning into a religious right mental home.

Christian Bradley

Well, speaking as a Starbucks Barista of many years, I am thrilled to see both the Maupin cup and the Warren cup. We at Starbucks embrace and celebrate diversity. That's the beauty of Starbucks. It's purpose, when you really listen to Howard Schultz is to bring us all together and get us talking. Gay, Straight, Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist, Athiest, Pornographer, Tax Collector, Evangelical, New York Liberal, we are all people. We all have our stories. We all have our way of seeing things. These cups are not about changing the way others see things, it's about sharing our own personal view. To show the world how things are through our eyes. I enjoy learning of others persepectives. These cups embrace diversity and I for one stand up and cheer "Bravo!" for all of them.

Embracing diversity is one of Starbucks Six Guiding Principles. I as a Barista proudly do it every day, it may be serving thought provoking quotes on cups, it may be sitting down with the Hindu jewelry kiosk owner from down the shopping center and conversing about his day, it may be even as simple as showing up and embracing a working relationship with my homosexual manager. My point is we are all different. Starbucks has always known this and celebrated this. These cups are a great way to get us to talk about our differences. Next time you glance down at your Quad Grande Americano read what someone else has to say. Digest it. Discuss it with the person next to you. The idea is to get you talking. So get out there and do it...

ludvika

i love the quote from NIKKI

Joi

I love any attempt to include and reach as many people as possible.

I think both quotes in question gave much needed nods to diversity. Also, a Christian, I love seeing God's name as many places as possible!

padner

in case no one realizes it...that program was never about pleasing anyone, let alone a "political group". if it had ever been about that do you think they would have put anything having to do with homosexuality on one of them to begin with? do you think they would have continued by putting something that could be considered "religious" on another one?

most of the people that are getting upset about these two, don't even realize that there are more than 60 other quotes about a variety of different ideas.

if people in this country can't handle the fact that other people have different views and lifestyles then they shouldn't live here. that is what america is supposed to be about.

A.J. Kilgus

I RECENTLY WENT TO STARBUCKS WITH MY 10 YEAR OLD SON. I HAD A LATTE` AND HE HAD A CUP OF COCOA. Nice innocent cocoa for a nice innocent child. A 3rd grader with great reading skills who decided to read his cup. Cup # 43. He says to me "Oh my gosh mom , there`s a BAD WORD on here!!!" He points to the word "DAMN" So I read the cup. YIKES! My 10 year old is now asking me as I`m reading, "Mom what does that mean?" I said " What?" He says "gay, I heard it before but what does it mean?" So I got to explain sexual orientation to my son that day. Blind sided, unprepared, and in a public place.
As to my personal view about everyones` sexual identity I say to each their own Their own way , their own journey and their own set of consequences .Whatever they may be. But these issues should not have to plague the mind of a child who just wanted a cup of cocoa.
I do not object to the freedom of speech exercised on the starbucks cups but I very much object to profanity and sexuality being placed in the hand of my child.
Perhaps Starbucks could get some support from National Literacy Council if they were to get a line of "The way Kid`s see it" cups. With exerpts from child oriented books. Or maybe a cross word or word find?? Or maybe they could stop serving cocoa and post a sign that says adults only.

OKCShift

The point of "The Way I See It" campaign is NOT, as many have claimed, to inspire. The campaign was designed because coffeehouses used to be places of great discussion and thinking. The quotes are intended to be thought-provoking discussion starters. While some of the quotes you may find inspirational, that's not the intent, so complaining about quotes that you aren't "inspired" by is pointless and taking the campaign out of context.
As for ceasing to serve cocoa and adults only signs? Almost as bad as "The Way Kids (Not Kid's) See It" cups. True, you may have found the quote on your son's cup inappropriate, but the short cup the kids cocoa comes in is also used for espresso and short espresso drinks. So to use the cups as a medium for kids quotes is just as stereotypical and cynical (although not as cruel) as putting "fat" quotes on Venti cups.
Crossword puzzles and word finds? Good idea maybe, but not on the cups. It would be far too large a hassle to deal with all the incoming lawsuits by people whose child suffered a burn while trying to solve a puzzle on the side of a HOT BEVERAGE cup.

Cactuscoffeechick

Awesome rebuttal there OKC. Also got to give props to Christian.

Maybe Starbucks could join forces with the nice wholesome Christian chain "Chick Filet" and help to exclude even more of its customer base and offend more of its partners by creating a chain of coffee cafes that sell chicken items as well, and call them "Christian Cafes" and their slogan could be "Jesus, this stuff is good!"

Calida Troxell

I think we should have witch qoutes on the cups. We have a god too, christians have hijacked God for too long. It is high time they learned how to share.

Partner!!

Did you know you could submit a quote? The funniest thing is when people say "I am not going to buy Starbucks coffee anymore b/c of this God quote (or Gay quote)" Did you not read the small writing, or even think, "This quote does not express the view of Starbucks!" I mean, get over it! Are we afreaid to be challenged by a quote, or a different ideology that this should be such a big deal? Open up your minds and listen to a different point of view. It doesn't hurt to think about other peoples point of views and perhaps open up your worldview as well! Get over it!!!!

Boston Barista

Are we (the masses) REALLY that small minded that we get offended over a quote?! A small line of literature that one person on the planet felt was inspirational and could help enrich and/or brighten someones' day? Can I use a bit of slang and say, "Eff this PC crap"? YIKES! We are regressing by the day; it's disgusting. The partners of Starbucks are here to "enrich the daily lives" of our customers. I know I don't work at Starbucks to create a war between people of Christ and homosexuals.

How many times do people use inspirational quotes by Ghandi? No one complains about then??????

There's no point in me complaining, is there?

Oh well... I make my customers happy (and got a 5 on my Customer Service Snapshot... woot!). lol.

Have a great day everyone!!!

Geoff

I think a "God" quote would be inspirational and a great conversation or discussion starter.

Flo

While there is still this talk about the God quotes, it seems that quotes are nice...so is God!

Now let's get on with the posting...check out the quotes in "Living For The Mornings! and " A Little More Cream Please" it has coffee poems and quotes...

Starbucks got the "Living For The Mornings! Poetry Collection...think that they are going to carry the book? No telling they might in the near future.

If they put a God quote on their cups then so be it for they have all the right to do that. We've got to start "Living For The Mornings! and get over it!

If you need "Coffee Cups/Poems" check out the web...and start maybe writing some quotes for Starbucks...some God quotes.
Nice visiting...will come back soon!

Have a great rest of the year!

Misty

For this topic of
Starbucks to put a God quote on its cups.
I think it be good because it be the starbucks diversity customers using the cups. There should be inspirational quotes from people of different ethnic groups and age categories and use of unoffensive language......
However, i might be talking off track here, but i heard starbucks takes its coffee from the slaves in Brazil, is this for real? Can some one fill me in on this?
If this is for real, then how can starbucks be thinking of putting on God quotes on one foot inspiring people and stepping on slaves with the other foot?

Yormum

I think you should put a saying on coffee because if starbucks is so famous than when people buy it they can learn something about jesus.

"Jesus wants you to be hyper for him!"

Kumba12

Maybe Howard Shultz is god or maybe god really digs Starbucks. I think I saw his son Jesus there one time, but it might have just been a stinky hippie. I think God would have been more direct if he actually wrote the Bible. Perhaps he will come through with a good quote for Starbucks.

KUMBAKILLA

Hey KUMBA12, how about, "Agnostic fools may freely drink cups of wrath"?

A part of our mission statement says that we embrace diversity so rather it is a gay quote or a God quote, it is what we are about at starbucks right? to each his own, but the truth be told the truth is more than to each his own. but to be fare what does it matter to you what is on a cup? as long as we live in America you can say what you like. You can't take one end of the moral spectrum and say it's okay to put on our cups and then lash out at Starbucks for having the other end on there as well. Does that seem wrong to anyone else? If the the acts derived from the soul are not governed by something other than the human heart where will humanity end up? What I am saying is that because you and I think someting is okay and dont like something else, if we all go on whatever we come up with then we have a falling out. So where do we meet in the middle? From where do we get the rules for life, down to what is alright to write on the side of a cup?
