Starbucks to begin selling Top Pot doughnuts in Oklahoma and Texas stores

The sugary doughnuts will then be in 2,500 Starbucks stores in 14 states. "Top Pot's doughnuts are among the select few sweets Starbucks labels in its pastry cases, which has built brand recognition for the three-store Seattle chain that hopes to expand beyond Washington," writes Melissa Allison. FYI: The Top Pot Old Fashioned Glazed Doughnut sold at Starbucks has 480 calories, 23g of fat, and 39g of sugar. (Seattle Times)

to compare witha Krispy Kreme Origianl Glazed:

200 calories, 12g of fat, and 22g of Carbs

You can't really compare the two donuts without distinguishing that KK is a raised donut and TP is a cake donut.

They have them here in Scottsdale, and as long as they are fresh, they are really good. If not, they taste like the cardboard they are likely packaged in. I think they must come from Seattle. Would be nice if they could freshness date them, or figure out another packaging solution.

if you're ever in Seattle... just go to one of the main stores- they're even more delicious at the store!

azsbux,
top pot partners with different local bakeries to bake their donuts using their recipes and techniques so that their donuts are delivered fresh in each starbucks market that carries them. They are a seattle company, but the donuts are not shipped FROM seattle.

Our store stopped carrying their apple fritters. I was sad, but my waistline is probably happier.

I wish SBUX would get some of the whole grain muffins that stores like Whole Foods sell, like a spelt-grain blueberry muffin with only a touch of sweetener. There have been many times when I'd have loved something to eat with my coffee, but just can't bring myself to eat the oversweetened junk in that pastry case. I've basically tried a piece of everything, and there really is no even remotely healthy option. At least not at any of the stores in my area. Of course, I know Starbucks isn't going to change just so I can have a barely-any-sugar whole grain muffin with my coffee. I'm in the distinct minority...people like everything so damned sweet all the time. I don't understand it.

They should offer some more healthy pastry choices - TALLDRIP has it right, other than a plain croissant everything is just covered with refined sugar, it is disgusting and deadly. What I miss on the east coast were these oat cakes I'd get in San Francisco, no sugar added and really healthy and go great with coffee. They don't get it, they demand we incur diabetes! But I generally don't buy pastries at starbucks anymore because they have been stale. If I want stale pastry I'll go to the roach coach on the corner.

My local Top Pot is so close, it's difficult to resist. Somehow, I suffer through....
But yeah, the TP in Starbucks are always stale and harder than they should be.....It does make them easier to avoid but still.....

"They don't get it, they demand we incur diabetes!"
I don't think anyone is demanding you buy that pastry, but for the people who want it, it's there.

donuts at starbucks...i think that sounds like a branding bad-call.

oh well...they're starbucks, and i'm sure they've done the research.

ny grump... that's pretty funny how you say that they should offer healthy pastry choices like a plain croissant! Do you know how much butter there is in one croissant? Have you ever made one?
On the subject of carrying top pot donuts, I think it's a brilliant pairing. I don't know about you, but coffee and donuts go together like peas and carrots, wine and pasta, margaritas and tacos, beer and chicken wings. It's just a classic pairing... not the most healthy by any means, but classic nonetheless.

the point the peson was making about the diabetes was the fact that tall of the pastries are laden with unreal amounts of fat, refined sugar, carbs etc...when i order a bluberry muffin I am eating
460 calories
32 grams of sugar
250 mg of sodium
65 grams of carbs
this is what is to be ingested at a meal.
Yes, in a sense we are demanding we incur diabetes, as there are no healthier OPTIONS to choose from. Even Pizza Hut offers a 'healthier' pizza selection. EVERYONE does. It's just that under the AUSPICE of a pastry, a consumer is INGESTING the equivalent of acandy bar. The reason being how the pastries are made, with tons of refined sugar, bleached flour, sodium, sugar...I personally do not understand why we as acompany make no genuine effort to have a healthier option...even butterfinger has a'lighter' candy bar..
So, yes, due to Starbucks not offering any other 'selections' to give the consumer the ABILITY to ingest a healthier pastry...we help to facilitate diabetes.
Nowadays in this business market, it is wise to offer selection.

They DO offer a selection...what about the no sugar added banana coffe cake, the low fat blueberry, cinnamon swirl, the low fat blueberry muffins, I could go on and on...no one is forcing you to eat the pastry...that is your choice.

With all due repect, I am glad you mentioned the No Sugar Added banana muffin etc, that is exactly what we are talking about. There needs to be more of a 'selection" if this is a selection then it is a false pretense of being better for you. I beg to differ
N.S.A.Banana
470 calaories
240 calories from fat
27 grams of fat
210 grams of sodium
63 grams of carbs
11 grams of sugar

L.F Blue
280 calories
50 calories from fat
490 grams of sodium
56 grams of carbs
45 grams of sugar

as you can see, there is no great difference in these as from the other pastry selections, all we are saying is that there should be a wider variety of pastries, that we should fall into step with the consumer demands and now even beauacratic when it come to offering a TRUE HEALTHIER variety in the pastries, that are in aligment with the new outlook of consumers having the ability to be more judicious in their buying power.
If there is a consumer interest in having more of a 'healthier' product, then so be it. People are tired now of just accepting the laisse faire attitude of having to accept just 'whatever' tHis is why the gourmet grocers have doubled their earnings. People want to have buying power. That is all.
The pasteries we currently sell are simply just unhealthy. I still am a proud Starbucks employee, but I have to call a spade a spade. There is a consumer need and a business need to revamp our pastry line up.
The reason they are actually a determent to one's health is the fact that the ingredients and processing of these food products is inepensive to produce. Therefore, there is a higher profit margin.

OH MY GOD!!! You people are insane, there is NO such thing as a HEALTHY pastry. You want healhty food, cook it yourself, coffee and donuts are always what is available at a coffee shop.

Yeah - Starbucks for HEALTH FOOD? I don't think so....Oh, and no one is demanding you do anything. If you have diabetes, you shouldn't buy this stuff no matter who is selling it. Sheesh

There is no sugar in the no sugar added banana coffee cake. Where are you getting your nutritional info from texas1?

No I am not insane.
The point we have been trying to make is to have the option of
"healthier" pastries.

It can be done.

The info is cited directly from the Starbucks webpage, there is sugar. It is not called a "No Sugar" item, it is called a 'No Sugar ADDED"
There is suagr in bananas.

The point the earlier post was making was that these pastries may incur diabetes, because they are soo overly laden with processed sugar and the carb count is what an entire sit down meal is, for one pastry!
What is so wrong with saying that our pastries need some overhauling and diversity?????
You can still offer the tried and true pastries ALONG with some 'healthier' ones, just like we make and sell DECAF coffee in addition to our regular coffee.
People would like a 'CHOICE', in their buying power, that is all this about.

Blah blah sugar, health, diabetes, blah blah.

Having spent some time in seattle I have to say this is good news...top pot doughnuts are fan-effing-tastic. I only hope they get them to nyc sometime soon! Bring the top pot blueberry cake donut!

great!!! more FAT PEOPLE!!!

Love your blog - check out mine!

Am a regular guest at Starbucks. It's my best coffee. i just want to know the calories if i have Laté with extra hazelnut and skimed milk. can you give me how many calories do this have for Grande size.
Thank you.

Diabetes is not caused by 'eating too much sugar'. It is caused by stress on the systems of the body. You can become pre-diabetic after only a few days of low-quality or 'short' sleep, regardless of diet. The lifestyle that causes adult onset diabetes (type II) has many factors including, but not limited to, poor diet.

I don't understand the fight about healthy options. The healthy option here is a tall black coffee or your choice of tea. Come on guys, Starbucks may be a ubiquitous brand, but they aren't tying people up and forcing them to eat the pastries. If you want a pastry with half the fat, share half your pastry with someone.

at the end of the day we all know it's not about health......it's about profits and from all of the conversations I've heard around our water cooler......Starbucks is passing up some bucks by not offering healthier choices. They could sell a coffee and something to go with it but most of our people just buy the coffee and pass on the pastries.

Top Pot is Seattle's best secret! I love going to TP to get my fat and sugar on!

Everyone needs to quit their bitching about healthy and not healthy "Pastries" at Starbucks. Pastries are not healthy, period. Bran Muffin? Who wants to eat that crap? Low fat options? People, low fat foods are normally loaded with even more sugar, thus even less healthy. Indulge, enjoy your pastry and except that its an unhealthy option, all fast food is. Yes, Starbucks is fast food.

If you want to be a health nut, get your breakfast on at home. Eat some Rice and Natto.

Yay for Top Pot!
