Starbucks ranks #7 in Fortune mag's "2008 Best Places to Work"

Fortune's "what makes it so great?" explanation isn't very meaty; it just says: "Rapid expansion led to a difficult year, but the stock rose 9% on January news that founder Howard Schultz is taking over the CEO post." No mention of benefits? Free coffee? Nothing like that? (Read the Fortune story via Yahoo Finance)

It gives more information as to salary and benefits, but as I've seen in the past, it's not all-inclusive. Salaries and benefits are based on store managers and coordinators, apparently.

What a sham... In arguably their worst year ever with more tenured folks up and leaving (which should be reflected in next years' results) Starbucks has managed to move UP the list. I'm still struggling with how they figure that 11.5% of an employee's time is spent on professional development.

In my time with the group putting together the submission, it was alot of running around and making up numbers and stats... it was always last minute too... We'll see how they fare in Training Mags Top 100 this year... that'll be a hoot

Your are right "PartNer" Pat Nerr! Starbucks is famous for high retention stats for store partners, but does poorly with it's mid and upperlevel execs. Directors and VP's are a dime a dozen and know the meaning of the "proverbial" revolving door at the regional and Seattle support centers.

Gosh, being #7 must stick in the craw of the malcontents. Sorry Pat. #7. No lies or fibs. Fortune gets survey responses from several hundred partners, most of whom are from the stores, directly. You can await the Training Mags, but really, who cares?

And they're nothing but a pain in the ass when they set foot in any of the stores.

We had an RDO that sang when he came into the stores, I wanted to punch him in his F****N face.

I can explain exactly why our positioning has gone up. We lost some bitter, bitter beans in the last 12 months. And we've shed the dead skin. I think our partners today recognize the value in working for our company. It actually makes perfect sense to me.

And I can confirm that I spend more than 11.5% of my time on my professional development. In fact, I have been more professionally developed by simple on-the-job training here than at any of my previous companies. I have reflected on my skills and talents and have grown and can speak to my growth. That's how I know I've been developed. And I continue to develop.

And Pat, what "group" did you work with that you speak of? Putting together "the" submission? The surveys are submitted directly to the employees, and the responses are captured by the Institute running the survey.

Would any of you Starbucks connoisseurs be interested in helping an MBA student find out information about the internal structure of Starbucks? It is quite difficult to get info that can illustrate how they are organized in terms of employees, middle management, upper management, exec level, geographical divisions, processes, etc.

This will help me asses the changes that are going on in the company.

I love my job. That's all I have to say. I don't know anyone in my life that finds so much happiness in their work with so few real complaints. I spend 11% of my time on my development, because I make it happen!!! The tools are there, use them. I for one am happy to take some stock at 18 bucks or less a share, I am confident that it will rise once again!

I've been at Starbucks for six months. The first three were really tough, but I was catching on. Then, my benefits started kicking in and thanks to my other jobs (plural) I had enough money. I got an award for "most improved" and a pretty good six month review...only now I seem to be getting about half as many hours as our newest partner and I am rapidly losing my religion. WTF!

Most SBX employees I run into sound like a bunch of disgruntled UPS drivers. Always pissed at something to do with their jobs or the company. But they keep going back every day. Lemmings.
