It's very good....but I liked the caramel macchiato better...they were testing it in our regional office the other day and I happened to wander in on a taste test! I also saw the tiny single serve cartons in the grocery store the other day they are very cute!

The caramel cappuccino swirl ice cream by starbucks is THE BEST. I wish we sold the ice cream at our store, but thank goodness for the Raley's in our parking lot!

Umm, maybe because we don't have freezers...

I tryed the caramel macchiato last week and it is SO good. I was really impressed. I usualy buy Ben and Jerry's but I may switch it up with this.

Selling Ice Cream was tried already. Visit the store in Culver City California on Washington & Culver. It was a test location built with marble counters with slide open freezers built into them. They sold it by the scoop in cups and in shakes. It hasn't been remodeled and it's all still there (except the ice cream of course).

supahvisah, are you in nor cal? my mom works at raley's with a starbucks in the parking lot :)

For the size of those yogurt drink and breakfast ovens, there's gotta be just enough room to serve ice cream of some sort! And I'd bet the ice cream would sell a lot more! :)

The cute little single servings of Haagen Dazs ice cream are 4 ounces. The cute little single servings of Ben& Jerry's as well as Starbucks are something like 3.7 ounces.
All of these little treats sell for $2 in my deli. So Starbucks has embraced the "smaller package for the same price" concept.

The ice cream might be good but we sell enough crap in the stores that shouldn't be sold in a coffee shop.
Posted by: enough is enough | March 30, 2009 at 06:23 PM
Sure, Let's sell ice cream. With shots of espresso poured on it. Maybe the customer would like whipped cream on top. And add a package of nuts from the oatmeal to the top. Kind of like a sundae. Ooh, ya know what would be good. We could then drizzle Caramel and mocha sauce on top.
And then the customer could respond by saying, "isn't the WC free? Why do I have to pay for drizzle?
I agree with Enough Is Enough.

Ice Cream and Espresso... um, it's called Affogato (very popular, in cafes over here in Australia anyway), and considering Starbucks now offer their own Ice Cream, it seems like a logical step! What's the point in offering a Starbucks product if it's not available in at least some of the stores?
More importantly, why is Starbucks refusing to launch all of their wonderful new inventions internationally? Beyond the USA and Canada, none of us get to enjoy the ice cream! No wonder we're all bored and abandoning the sbux wunderkind.

Ben Rylan:
If it was up to me, I'd send you all of Starbucks "wonderful new inventions". I would include their inferior senior management too. You can have the whole stupid group.

Ben, Actually my above description sounds real good to me. And I might just make it for myself.
But, I don't want to become an ice cream shop for the High School students.
Posted by: spence | March 30, 2009 at 07:38 PM
a few years ago my store in chicago was a test for ice cream and shakes.....failed. then i moved to florida and we were the test for affogato fraps. they sold well but never made it past the test. they are easy to make. make your frap then make a layer of carmel or mocha on top. then add a shot...do not mix let it mix itself.

For me this is far better than caramel macchiato. And I absolutely love it aside from my all-time favorite pistachio gelato! :)

I ate some today, on my half.

I am indeed in Norcal!

Corrigendum: The cute single serving is even smaller -- 3.6 ounces only. I had the java chippoccino flavor for dessert. It was fine.

@ Ben
We Canadians won't get it either. For some reason Starbucks ice cream is not considered to be safe by Canadian Food authorities. It might have to do with the kind of dairy they are using to make it.
Apaprently there are some kinds of hormones allowed in US milk that are not allowed in Canada.
That's at least what I was told.
It sounds yummy, though.
Posted by: Me | March 31, 2009 at 06:50 AM
If Starbucks allowed for stores to sell their ice cream, stores would be forced to get freezers to put up front to keep the product chilled. Idk... it could get pretty pricey.

"Apaprently [sic] there are some kinds of hormones allowed in US milk that are not allowed in Canada."
Well, this may be a minor point, but there is plenty of milk in the USA without that crap in it. For instance, my local Dairy, Oakhurst, says the following on their website:
"[customers] had concerns about artificial growth hormones, or rBST, in milk. Its use is banned in the European Union in order to protect animal health and welfare. The product is also not approved in Canada. Although the FDA has approved it for use in the US, we believe that our Farmers' Pledge is in the best interest of customers and cows alike. We've never used artificial growth hormone and we never will!"
So, if SBUX wanted to use better milk, and have it legal as an ingredient in Canada and elsewhere, it could be done.
As a side note, I do not want to serve sticky ice cream to high school punks and their soccer moms. I bet it's tasty, though!

Make it single serving size and people can get it themselves, just like in the grocery store close to the register. And it wouldn't even take up too much space in stores with enough room. A little mobile freezer on wheels which can be relocated if it needs to be and can be stored outside the store during winter. It might work. I would love to see it happen (at a reasonable price).
Posted by: me | March 31, 2009 at 12:23 PM
Of course it tastes "just like" the drink...it's all engineered flavor additives anyway.

i suppose the cost of freezers & stuff is why starbucks doesnt do it, along with the fact that they may not have room in a lot of starbucks to have a bigger 'back' freezer with the supplies. i would think though that in bigger starbucks in big cities they would be able to do it & that it would be popular.
i dont know why starbucks doesnt sell alcoholic drinks at the stores. they sell various types of alcohol at grocery stores like mudslides & other stuff like that. instead of $4 a drink they could charge $6-$8 for an alcoholic drink. maybe its because they have so many workers under 21 that those people arent allowed to touch or serve alcoholic drinks, but i think in especially some bigger locations it would be a good idea. that wouldnt take nearly the room as implementing ice cream.

not related to ice cream...
I've been an avid fun of starbucks for almost a 6 years now,an I can say I had that almost everyday,... but I am so sorry I have to end it.
The taste for me is all the same and it's like there's no excitement anymore. Eventhough they came up with different flavors now..damn!! they're all still practically taste the same. Hmm,or maybe I am bored?
And please, how come some coffee shopes can manage to have a frequent drinker card and if you reach the certain number of drink, the next one is free? and yet they're pricier that yours?
Don't you think it's TIME TO GIVE BACK!!?
that can be a good marketing strategy and at the same time I/others (who stopped)might consider to come back?
hmmmm....?
Posted by: xbucky | March 31, 2009 at 07:15 PM
the only other coffeeshop i go to around here besides starbucks has a card where u buy 9 i think then get 1 free. with that it makes the drinks about the same price as starbucks, a little bit more, but then they also have MANY MANY more syrup flavors than starbucks, which is what i really like about that place. i think should really add about 4 more permanent syrups, at least that many. the only thing i usually get is an iced cinnemon dolce or sometimes caramel latte, then for hot a caramel macchiato. i wish theyd add dolce de leche, banana coconut, gingersnap and a few more permanently instead of seasonal specials.
i am a little bit bored but i dont go everyday i usually go 2-3 times a week. if i was rich id go everyday though ;) or better yet have someone bring it to me :)

Cinnamon. It is spelled cinnamon.

One of the commenter said that there's no fridge, then buy one. Maybe it's time for them to expand their business and listen to what their customer's need and wants. Who knows kids might love the taste and presto a new set of customer?!...

That sounds yummy! :)

I can't wait to try the mocha frap flavor. That's been my favorite cold drink for awhile now.

Where I live, in Melbourne, Australia, we have a particular breed of ice cream store that attracts only those ultra-serious about their ice cream, i.e. no high schoolers or soccer moms. All Starbucks has to do is master the branding; attract the right people, not just anyone.
They've got a lot to do... at least with the Australian stores. Utterly shameful.

Anyone know if they sell the new ice-cream in Canada?
