i thought last year the flavor to the pumpkin spice had changed a little from previous years and wasnt nearly as good. it seemed too strong or just not that great tasting. hopefully they changed it slightly for this year.
2 years ago on the gingersnap latte that didnt taste great either, it was too strong and or just not the right flavor, but then last year they changed it a little and it was really great. so hopefully they do that this year with pumpkin spice.

No pumpkin spice pumps broken... yet...
Posted by: CamSpi | September 01, 2009 at 12:07 PM
Hah! I hated the pumpkin spice last year. This year I love it! We made pumpkin spice/vanilla whipped cream...it was pretty awesome.
Posted by: bcshift | September 01, 2009 at 12:30 PM
I'm not willing to try a pumpkin spice latte again unless they offer a freebie to registered card holders. It has changed from being pretty good to fairly awful over recent years. I'll stick to the usually predictable CDL (although a CDL I got on the weekend was godawful, I think they put caramel in by mistake and then added CDL syrup on top).

Had a pumpkin spice frappuccino sample today and it was delicious. The pumpkin cream cheese muffins also looked good...
Posted by: Amy | September 01, 2009 at 01:33 PM
Where is the pumpkin loaf? I didn't see any today and I hit three different starbucks already. :-(
Posted by: me myself and I | September 01, 2009 at 01:57 PM
We have the pumpkin loaf and scones year-round here in Seattle. SO that makes the cream cheese muffins a welcome alternative.

USD goal of 78 PSL was met at 1pm today! We are so happy to have an attainable goal!!! (for once) goodbye force feeding Vivannos to customers!

I'm not the least convinced that this is a "non-corporate site".
Posted by: Sense | September 01, 2009 at 04:13 PM
An iced coffee with pumpkin spice substituted for the classic syrup and a little bit of added half-and-half is AMAZING. Just an FYI.
Posted by: Jonathan | September 01, 2009 at 04:32 PM
Couldn't make it in today, but it's on my list for tomorrow!

Unfortunately for me, living in SoCal, a "pumpkin" latte will have to wait... Doesn't mix well with Smoke, Ashes, Heat, and Humidity. Fall still seems so far away. And technically it is: 9/21/09 is the First day of fall. Why do the retailers have to "rush" everything? Thank God Starbucks hasn't gotten that "yule tide" feeling yet.
Posted by: Thought of the Day | September 01, 2009 at 06:56 PM
Ugh it tastes like candle wax. I don't care for this years version too much, as far as a latte. The creme fraps you can't really go wrong, they all taste fantastic. Even without the syrup, creme's fantastic.
We've had pumpkin loaves here for the past few months (LA area)

I love love love pumpkin spice. Unfortunately I burned myself out on them last week so I was not celebrating today with everyone else
Posted by: Brown Dot | September 01, 2009 at 08:02 PM
I want to try black tea with pumpkin..
Posted by: Tanya | September 01, 2009 at 08:04 PM
Johnathon -
Thanks for that! I usually get that same drink but with toffee nut, so I bet I'd like it!
Posted by: ash_sk8s | September 01, 2009 at 08:12 PM
Heck no! Had one my first year. Never again. Don't see the draw that convinces people to buy this stuff up out of date on eBay for $60+ a jug. Let's talk about the yummy pumpkin cream cheese muffins or (gasp) the Anniversary Blend which is quite delicious. With a pumpkin cream cheese muffin, of course.

my store sold hardly any...i just don't think it is popular...
Posted by: BouncingBarista | September 01, 2009 at 08:37 PM
Are you kidding? Not popular? I've worked tonight and had two customers literally hugging me for having the PSL back.
It was actually a bit weird.
Especially since I'm not the greatest fan of it myself.
Posted by: me myself and I | September 01, 2009 at 09:20 PM
it depends on your customers. I didn't get too many orders for the latte, but people where overjoyed that we had gotten maple scones back.
Posted by: Barista Ben | September 01, 2009 at 09:28 PM
There ought to be a "National Pumpkin Spice Latte" day.
The customers were near frenzy with joy.
Posted by: spence | September 02, 2009 at 09:35 AM
My store was doing terrible with sales yesterday. I was shocked how low it was when I went in for my 4 hour shift last night. Luckily I sold 6 of them myself in the 4 hours so we actually made our goal.
Seriously if I can sell 25% of the total sales during the slowest part of the day with the smallest shift other people ought to do better.
Couple of suggestions for PS. PSChai is yummy...and make a BCB Vivanno but sub pumpkin spice for the chocolate...like a pumpkin shake only not bad for you as a frap! :-)
Posted by: GRTL | September 02, 2009 at 09:38 AM
Pumpkin Spice by itself is OK at best, not the greatest. It reminds of Autumn though, that's for sure. Now, Pumpkin Spice with a hint of Mocha syrup, DELICIOUS!!!
Posted by: SBUCKS DRONE LOS ANGELES | September 02, 2009 at 09:59 AM
@GRTL - I had a barista talk me into trying an iced Pumpkin Spice Chai drink yesterday and loved it! And I did start yesterday off with a Pumpkin Spice Latte just because it's new and a nice seasonal flavor - not much of a latte drinker usually. Loved it!

<3 PSL
Posted by: splash! | September 02, 2009 at 10:40 AM
Hey, are the maple scones regional or national?
Posted by: jt | September 02, 2009 at 11:01 AM
I had two iced pumpkin spice lattes yesterday during my shift!! YUMMY!! On my way to my hometown store on my day off for another. Although I think I'm gonna try an Pumpkin Spice Americano. I'll be soooo sixk of this stuff in about a month!!! Did you know that the pumpkin sauce in fact has no actual pumpkin in it?? Just food for thought.
Posted by: Beantown Bearista | September 02, 2009 at 12:34 PM
I'm trying to watch my weight...anyone? What is the nutritional information for one pump of the pumpkin sauce?
Posted by: GRTL | September 02, 2009 at 12:42 PM
Does anyone think that PSl came out a month or so early to try increase foot traffic in the stores because they know it is something ppl really like? Am I just thinking to much? I mean Fall doesn't start for three more weeks and at least in the south it is still hot. Like I have already seen Halloween candy and it is the first of Sept. I have seen a couple of people today that were excited but I just can't think about asking every customer "Would you like a pumpkin spice latte today"?
I don't quite get why the pumps for frapps are only 1-2-3 that just doesn't seem like enough flavor to taste but then the customizable ones taste different than the premixed stuff anyway. Oh well I guess the Holidays have begun, good luck to us all.
Posted by: @usorthem3 | September 02, 2009 at 04:00 PM
oh crap. The frapp recipe for PSF is 1,2,3 pumps. TG for this site. I haven't made one yet but I doubt I would have even looked at the recipe.
Posted by: spence | September 02, 2009 at 04:05 PM
Wait wait, coffee base frappuccino is 1-1-2 right? PSF is different than the normal?
Posted by: Aces of Eight | September 02, 2009 at 06:05 PM
PSL have come out the first Tues of September for the last few years. Nothing new about that. It is NOT a ploy for short-term profit/foottraffic, other than the annual parade.
Posted by: jt | September 02, 2009 at 06:41 PM
My fave Starbucks barista made me a Pumpkin Spice Latte before the Sept. 1 debut because I said I was excited to have one. And she was like, "well the syrup is here already if you want one, our secret!" I heart my barista and my local Starbucks. They are such nice people all the time.
Posted by: Nandypants | September 02, 2009 at 07:59 PM
78USD?!?! I thought our goal of 45 was high. Whats your daily sales like???
Posted by: crema_the_crop | September 02, 2009 at 08:09 PM
The pumpkin cream cheeze muffin is SO SO SO GOOD... moist and fresh... it's the best!!! OMG
The ice pumpkin spice latte is not bad.
Posted by: JonnySF | September 02, 2009 at 09:03 PM
Usorthem3 is in a "Customizable Frappuccino" area, so the recipe is different. (I know usorthem3 is in this area because we're from the same store!) I wouldn't freak out if you thought the recipe was 1-1-2.
Posted by: CamSpi | September 02, 2009 at 11:58 PM
We fluctuate between 29-32k a week (excluding holiday when we have topped 50k a week) about 5-6k a day then 8-9k on Friday and Saturday....it's a madhouse and they all want pumpkin which is good for us!
Posted by: Coffee Soldier | September 03, 2009 at 04:38 AM
What I couldn't believe is how many people didn't want free samples of the pumpkin stuff. Like 80% of the customers.
Posted by: Moe Szyslak | September 03, 2009 at 09:15 AM
We managed to get some muffin samples moved, but our customers were not very happy about it. I barely even began to offer the sample when one customer said "NO!" Pastries are a very tough sell in our market.
That said, I love all the pumpkin stuff - the lattes, the muffins, everything!
We're supposed to get a "surprise drink" in November.
Posted by: Moe Szyslak | September 03, 2009 at 09:20 AM
i got a venti iced psl yesterday and it seemed better than last year mainly because the pumpkin / spice flavor seemed milder, but you cant really judge from one drink because it mighta had a little less syrup than it was supposed to, or sometimes people add a little more than supposed to.
im going to a dif starbucks today and ill get it there, their lattes dont seem quite as good as the other stores, i dunno how much it really matters but todays store inserts the espresso directly into the cup and i think the other store might still do it with the espresso into the shot glasses first. also people have said on here how there is a proper order to making a latte to produce the best flavor, like first milk then ice then syrup or whatever it is, i dunno if this store today or really many stores follow the correct formula on that.
the worst part is that its $4.35 here, the most expensive latte on the menu. with my registered card i can get a venti cinnamon dolce latte for $3.55 + tax. cdl is my fav at starbucks and psl isnt better than that so although i have a black card i can use for the psl, its still more expensive than all the other drinks.

Moe Szyslak,
Are you from Canada? A partner at my store said something about a surprise drink, but I couldn't find it in the Siren's Eye...
Posted by: CamSpi | September 03, 2009 at 05:00 PM
Are they EVER going to make a SF Pumpkin Spice syrup? I love the taste--but there's way too much sugar :(
Posted by: Chrissy | September 03, 2009 at 06:05 PM
"What I couldn't believe is how many people didn't want free samples of the pumpkin stuff. Like 80% of the customers." Posted by: Moe Szyslak
Because it's 99% sugar and flour! Seriously, if I'm not willing to shell out a couple of bucks for it, why should I eat it just because it's free? Some people think that stuff is over-sweetened processed junk :) like the coffee though!
Posted by: sugar overload | September 03, 2009 at 07:22 PM
Pumpkin spice chai= a zillion calories, all from sugar.
Posted by: fmrSM | September 03, 2009 at 07:38 PM
Is it supposed to have whipped cream, or not? Because I have had one each day so far, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and I only got whipped cream on the 1st. If it's supposed to have whipped cream, the baristas need to be trained better. This was at the SB at 87th and Metcalf in Overland Park, Kansas.
Posted by: Sam | September 04, 2009 at 05:53 AM
Yep, PSL has whipped cream
Posted by: javafan | September 04, 2009 at 06:06 AM
It seems the customers at my store don't mind the PSL. Actually, they are really excited about it!! A lot of sugar is ok every once in a while :)
Posted by: javafan | September 04, 2009 at 06:08 AM
PSL is delicious with a pump of White Mocha!
Posted by: Back to Basics | September 05, 2009 at 09:22 AM
Well, I had my 1st Pumpkin Spice Latte of the year yesterday, but it was WAY too strong on the pumpkin flavor. It was bitter, and on top of that the whipped cream made a greasy orange layer on top that I couldn't get past. They very kindly gave me another just now, (I saved the other for a taste test since they didn't want it back) and it is better, but I don't remember PSL looking orange or greasy in the previous 2 years. Am I just remembering it wrong? I thought it looked creamy brown and it was all about the flavor.
Oh well, I was alittle disappointed after waiting for it to come back, but I'll still get Starbucks.
Posted by: pumpkin | September 05, 2009 at 01:23 PM
I think the PSL totally tastes different this year - am I nuts? I guess maybe I am. It seems way more nutmeg-y than pumpkin-y. Maybe I'm just remembering wrong.
