Starbucks' chief financial officer says: "Given the continued strength of our business, as evidenced by record third-quarter earnings and the resulting strong cash flow, we have increased our quarterly cash dividend." Read "Starbucks increases cash dividend"
Money for stockholders, less benefits for employees -- sorry, "partners."
Sounds like a great way onward!

Be happy you have a job.

I'm a partner and a shareholder...thanks for the extra $$ Starbucks...it makes me feel like a little piece of this company is my own and geting an extra couple bucks is great...all you partners who complain on here have 4 opportunities a year to opt in to buying stock in SIP and become a shareholder as well...not to mention a little benefit called Bean Stock as well that you don't have to do a thing for except your job!!

I'm a partner and I have thousands of stock options, keep it up Starbucks. Happy investing!

I am a 15 year Partner and I've seen many changes within our company, lost friends due to the lay offs and changed managers/supervisors a dozen times.I debated to leave the company . However, Im glad that I stayed. I get so inspired and encouraged when I hear Howard speak of new ventures and growth with our company. I knew we would be back on top again! Thanks Howie!

Of course, we still get less money on the dividend since Obama raised the dividend tax by 164%

everybody panic, the right-wing radical conned-servatives have taken over the discussion!

Not to worry, the left wing ridiculous, hip liberals will come save the day.

@complaining -- oh, believe me, when I was a "partner" I kept my head down and didn't complain.
Now I have a different job that pays me a living wage, so, I am happy to speak up for the SBUX employees who also need to keep their noses to the grindstone.
The SIP is kind of a joke -- the discount was slashed in the benefit-cutting period, you're probably better off just buying shares through ING, though, where you could afford shares from, I do not know.
The secret killer of standards of living is not so much hourly wages, which are low but, I suppos, competitive. Rather, it is the fight for hours -- I remember when Shifts were relatively guaranteed full-time hours. Back then I got 40 hours a week as a shift, and once in a while got an hour of OT.
Current shifts -- at least in several local districts -- average more like 30-32, and some have to work several stores to do that.
As far as "bean stock" goes: I'm really not sure what to say about that. How long does one have to be employed by SBUX to be awarded any? I know I never did.
Yes indeed, there are far worse places to work than Starbucks. But, SBUX ONCE stood out as a spectacular place to work. They've gone from an A, to a B minus.
Now, their share price has recovered, their dividend has increased, Howard et al's compensation climbs into increasing millions, but the standard of living of the fleets of Baristas and Shifts who make the company function has decreased.

@argentius:
actually, starbucks goal is to have MORE full time partners.
At my store all partners average 34hours/week. All of my full time shifts get 35+ hours a week. It is the same at every store in my district as far as I know.
it only takes a year to get bean stock, as long as you work a certain amount of hours in that year.

the liberals are the ones who have something to complain about because they just want to be heard...something must be missing from their lives.
Posted by: stop complaining | July 22, 2010 at 05:51 PM
true in my area as well Hipsterdufus!

@ stop complaining:
You DO realize the irony of your post, don't you?
Posted by: (former) FLA SM | July 23, 2010 at 04:43 AM
Actually, I'll keep complaining.
This website is, for me, a place to vent and commiserate. I intend to use it as such. I am a skilled employee, and if I want my workplace or compensation to improve and those requests fall on deaf ears, then yes, I'll complain.
Don't like it? I don't care.

Only way you are going to get a living wage from this company is if you join the union.
Posted by: James Connolly | July 24, 2010 at 01:07 PM
actually starbucks does technically pay a living wage in almost every area I've looked it up in.
Posted by: Christinschu | July 25, 2010 at 06:24 PM
Then you either need to redo your research or redefine what you call a living wage because Starbucks neither gives sufficient hours nor pays enough for someone to live on their own without a second job or financial support.
Posted by: James Connolly | July 27, 2010 at 09:15 AM
@james connolly -- leave this message board, uve got to be kidding me. honestly, what planet r u living on man? u clearly lack any view of reality. do yourself a favor and just leave before you embarrass yourself even more.
Posted by: james | July 27, 2010 at 11:08 AM
actually it is you than needs to research what a living wage is. There are technical definitions for it and starbucks DOES provide a living wage.
Posted by: Christinschu | July 27, 2010 at 02:06 PM
well said...

Three things.
1) http://www.livingwage.geog.psu.edu/ This is a calculator that shows what a living wage is the various states and counties in the US. I did not get to a living wage for my county until I had worked for the company for six years...and that's only because I'm the only person I'm supporting. If I had a child, I wouldn't be at a living wage level at all. There's not a single worker at my store who gets the full forty hours per week required for it to be a living wage. The only people who get forty hours are the SM and ASM.
2) Talking to other Starbucks workers, union and nonunion and spread throughout the country, the company does not start people at a living wage ANYWHERE. The only people who get paid enough to live independently and work in the stores are ASMs and SMs, who make up less than 10% of the people who have daily interaction with the customers.
3) I'm not going anywhere just because some Mr. Block apologists for the company think I should. Don't like what I say? Don't read it. Think I'm biased? It's because the facts are against the company and against the hilarious misinformation that gets thrown around by people trying to cover for Starbucks.

WEll SAID! James Connolly
If minimum wage kept up with inflation, it would be around $16.50/HR. If it kept up with the rate of CEO pay increases over only the last 10 years, it would be about $62.00/HR. No shit. And those figures are based on increases from the Federal minimum wage of $5.20/HR (though it has increase in that last several years- unless you get tips in certain states then it's like $2.50). And that's assuming one uses the aggregated inflation rate that the media throws around. (which is like Steve Martin once said - "if you have a dollar and you spend $.17 on a loaf of bread, you're left with $.83. If you have $16,000 and you spend $.17 on a loaf of bread....you still have $16,000")
Minimum wage is slavery. Starbucks starts most "partners" at or just above minimum wage, in Washington State (highest minimum wage in the country).

Each episode has the chefs exploring a specific challenge they set for themselves-- make stuff that tastes like junk food entirely out of pulverized granola bars and those green super-food smoothies; make "seafood" out of not-seafood; make a veggie burger out of what cows eat that tastes better than a burger made from meat. Those are the three episodes I've seen so far. Apparently the show was new in the spring, and these are reruns. Wikipedia doesn't even have an episode guide for this thing, so, really, I figure I'm the only person who has ever seen it. The number of blogs I've found that mention this show is a smaller number than the number of blogs Ias have in my blogger account, so it really seems like it's pretty obscure.
