I generally have a few personal mugs of Starbucks brewed coffee every day (5 or 6 on some days) -- so I no doubt exceed the daily limit by far. And yet I generally sleep just fine.

Actually there is no "recommended daily limit of caffeine for an adult" in the US.

Many drinks such as soft carbonated drinks are regulated by the FDA in the amount of caffeine they can contain. Energy drinks are not regulated yet.
I'm a heavy coffee drinker (espresso, dark roasted), and I can tell you that I've gone as far as 4 talls/grandes a day and sometimes 2-3 Starbucks double shots (the big cans).
I think that the body gets the coffee tolerance up, and then I don't sleep if I don't get the Starbucks.
