I really don't think people understand how loud it is in a Starbucks behind the counter. With the blender, milk steaming, the oven beeping, the coffee timer beeping, customers talking, blah blah blah, I often get names wrong.
Me:"Can I get your name for your cup?"
Customer: "Thomas..."
Me: "Davis...?"
Customer: "No, Thomas."
*insert thinking pause*
Customer:"... it's Thomas..."
Me: "Oh, Thomas." (Thinking that on the second time he said Dumb A$$. Why anyone would put that on their cup confused me)
Long story short, it's loud behind the bar. We can't always get things perfect with names. And instead of asking you 12 times to get it right, we put what we think we heard so you don't get annoyed.

.. And then you get annoyed. :(

There's no winning. Or I can hand you the cup and you can put your name on it, but that might be too much of an inconvenience, so you continue to complain that we got your name wrong.

I agree, it gets real loud during peak periods especially and having customers who mumble their names.... I just wouldn't bother trying to get them to repeat themselves and so I would scribble the first thing I thought I heard. I would let them know the name on the cup and to listen for it at the bar. Most of the time customers would just smile/giggle and are completely fine with it. LOL....
Our objective is to get your order right and not the spelling of your name on the cup!

It is SUPER loud back there! I cant even hear our music playing! The oven plays a huge part in that.. customers have no idea! My head buzzes for hours after the thing has been shut down too!

Not to mention if you work in a DT store. The buzz gets ten times louder, and the person calling the line might have a headset blaring in his ear with someone in the drivethru complaining because we can't hear THEIR order because they refuse to speak louder than a childish mumble. So sorry I can't hear if you said "Clair" or "Cher", but I'm sure you're still smart enough to figure out that it's your half-caf venti soy extra hot 5 and a half splenda latte anyway.

I like the use of names because it's just easier for all involved on a busy morning. Both my fiance and I use "Starbucks names" instead of our real names because our real names are unusual and it keeps the line moving faster. I wish more people did that.
Also, do you really care if your name is spelled correctly on your cup?

As a partner at a DT store I know it gets really loud, customers mumble, etc. I get plenty of names wrong too, but there is no real excuse for the above cup. The barista clearly heard, bryan with a y, but why they thought the y would go at the end, I have no idea.

As a barista I could give a f**k about writing names on the cup. As long as the drink is right and the connection is there f**k the name it's a waste of time. Sadly I have to take names its my job so please people speak up and if I spell it wrong who cares move on with your life!

I usually lie and say Noah. No one mixes up that name. :)
