Starbucks is really pushing its new Green Tea Frappuccino
I can't tell you how many times I've been offered samples in the past two days. (I politely turned them down every time; I have no interest in the drink.) Any reviews from Starbucks Gossip readers? (Starbucks Press Release)
Just tried my first green tea frappuccino, and had a horrible reaction to it, severe diarrhea and awful stomach cramps. I am on-line trying to figure out what might be in it to cause such an intense and immediate reaction.

ugh...Hirayuki...TMI!!!
I really enjoyed the green tea frap...as long as I didn't look at it. I love the color green but not when i'm drinking it!

The drink looks gross!
Posted by: CGG | July 22, 2005 at 07:51 AM
I haven't been able to taste it because it just doesn't look "right". Fodd that color should not be consumed!

I have been asking why I could get the Green Tea Frappachino (called the Macha Frappachino in Japan) here...and suddenly its here!
Tastes exactly the same. Now I am addicted except that I have not been able to find out the calorie count. I like it better with no syrup and no whipped cream. Does anyone know what the calorie count of a Grande is with those changes?

The Green Tea Frappucino is fabulous. Just skip the melon syrup and you're all set. I lived in Malaysia and its now permanently on the Starbucks menu over there.

Just took a few sips of my $4.00 Green Tea Frap. I just WASTED my four bucks as far as I'm concerned. It tastes like tea flavored grass. It's by far the worst think I've ever ordered at SB. I had no idea that it would taste so crappy. In fact I think I'll just trash it now. SB in my opinion is going downhill. I'm starting not to even like them anymore. If they would just stick to coffee....plain ol' coffee.

Blech, I drank a Grande Green Tea Frapp this weekend, and it tasted like sweet bathroom cleaner to me.
EXACTLY!!!! It tastes like doctored-up bathroom cleaner. Maybe, as I'm dumping my drink down the ol' commode, I'll stick my toilet brush in there and give it a few shakes before flushing. That's a great idea.

Does anyone else think these things taste like a Shamrock Shake?
Posted by: Irish-man | July 27, 2005 at 02:45 PM
I kinda loved it. Wonder how many calories does it have though :) May be a 1000 for the grande with the whip ?

Erica, Leigh...the posters' names are BELOW their posts. I'm one of the pro-GTF people here.
I asked a Toronto barista if they could add extra tea, as had been suggested here, and it was even better than the others I'd had. Definitely a worthy tweak.
Posted by: Hirayuki | July 27, 2005 at 10:11 PM
the GTF is actually the drink of my summer this year; it has less traditional green tea taste and definitely up'd in its melon-ness.
i really do hope they make it a permanent menu drink in the states a la japan et al.

I have been offered free mini size sample of the green tea, at first I was like no way , but once I tried it is was actually good.It is not too sweet , refreshing and fulling. Although, like a prevous posting it does have a grasst taste at the end. I even told all my friends and co-worker to try it. They have since tried it and had said that it tastes good. If you are offered a free sample, give it a try

I am hooked! but, then again, I was apparently one of the few people who loved the green tea latte's SB tried to introduce in Vancouver (Canada). I like it without the whip (hate the stuff) and no melon syrup (I want to TASTE the green tea). And this from someone who orders no room Americanos year-round. I've had it made by different baristas and the green tea taste does vary. I think they are adding different amounts of the matcha. Mostly though, the flavor is pretty clear and up front on your palate. I think I'll try it with the extra matcha powder, thanks for the tip! (BTW SB has the calorie content for the drink with no whip on their site)

Crazi i hate the beverage. by far the worst and messiest of all of starbucks creations... i hate every aspect of this beverage... it is NOT HEALTHY and i dont like recommending it to my customers.... Jamba Juice has a much better MATCHA creation and it is not nearly Loaded with sugar... its too bad that starbucks hasnt been very creative with beverage ideas... i mean chantico... what a joke... we dont even make it up anymore... what are they going to do next???

NYC is making the green tea frapps irresistable! I'm substituting my lunches for this liquid delectible. As a few have mentioned--tastes like a flavorful green tea ice cream. I'm loving it and the color makes me happy, too.
Posted by: joiseysue | August 04, 2005 at 02:52 PM
Just had another GTF. These are so good, it scares me to think about how many additives or "natural flavorings" I have just consumed! The worst things for you are always the best tasting!!
Posted by: Gregg P | August 04, 2005 at 04:42 PM
tastes absolutely nothing like green tea, looks like something the girl from the exorcist threw up (or guacamole), you might as well get the vanilla bean frappuccino with a squirt of melon, absolutely a waste of money, the melon syrup is actually very good in the passion tea instead of the classic syrup, gives it more of a tropical flavor
Posted by: layla | August 04, 2005 at 05:21 PM
So you've never had matcha, right, Layla? Because this tastes like matcha. It might not taste like the green tea that's in, say, their new iced green tea offering, but that's because we're talking about two different kinds of green tea. I can approximate a GTF in my kitchen with a heaping teaspoon of matcha powder straight from Japan.
Posted by: Hirayuki | August 09, 2005 at 07:12 AM
The Green Tea Frap needs some help from the way they make it. The way I've found to best alter it is to hold the whip and the melon syrup and double up on the matcha. Still ends up tasting like a vanilla milkshake, but a nice treat once in a while. Another coffee/tea drink for the non-coffee/tea drinkers. Might as well go to In and Out and get a Malt.

I am in love with the green tea frappucino! I had to try it, because I always get green tea ice cream at japanese resturants, and it's pretty similar. And, regarding the taste, it actually does taste like it.
Posted by: Izzabehr | August 18, 2005 at 02:39 AM
I never order from Starbuck but 1 day they gave me a sample of green tea frappucino when I past. Ever since then I have been going back every few days to buy a green tea frappucino. Now I understand my people are going broke at Starbucks.

I have had green tea frappachino in both Japan and the US. The Matcha frappachino (as they call it in Japan) is far superior and I really liked it. Why do they put melon flavoring in it here in the US? I really don't care for it as it overpowers the matcha flavor. I'll try ordering it without the melon, but in the meantime, my daughter-in-law sent me some matcha from Japan so I can try to make my own matcha frappachino.
Posted by: Sal | August 19, 2005 at 11:34 PM
Has any barista here tried to steam the matcha powder with milk? (Sorry if someone had written about this concoction before, I didn't read through all of the posts) One of my co-workers tried this when we received the matcha powder, and it reminded me of steamed edamame. I don't like the powder at all, and I have a very difficult time recommending the Frappucino to customers.
Posted by: Dayna | August 22, 2005 at 04:06 PM
The matcha mix has honeydew flavoring in it so it's not as sweet. I don't know if anyone has ever had the tazo matcha tea latte made with half milk and half the matcha mix from the little green box. Also the green tea frap differs from place to place i think because some employees don't make level scoops of the green tea powder. I like the green tea frap when i make it myself but sometimes it gets grassy and gross if other make it with heaping scoops. I have used the green frap powder with milk but you need the melon syrup to make it taste like the matcha tea latte. When i tried it, it was very similar. Also i think it's funny that people are like "It doesn't taste like green tea"... I think it tastes as much like green tea as the coffee frap tastes like coffee. And this may be me but does anyone think that starbucks caramel syrup tastes like maple syrup more than real caramel.
Posted by: Ashley | September 02, 2005 at 12:02 AM
Today at work i accidently made the UBB mix with water instead of milk...it was right before my shift ended...is this such a big deal, im like worried all of the fraps are gonna be bad now :(

I loved the green tea Frap - I just have trouble paying 4.00 for a .90 cent drink. I'm going to experiment and learn how to make my own. I did the same thing with the overpriced Jamba products. Great product by why rip us off. I have learned to make many of your other coffee drinks too just because they are priced so high. Make it worth my while and I will drop by daily otherwise I will continue to stop by a few times a year to what is new on the menu.
Thanks

I love the green frapp!! I'm from Vegas and I ordered one almost everyday the venti of course! I went there yesterday to get one and they don't sell it anymore!!!!! So I got the caramel frap instead but the tall. Right after me another woman asked for the same green tea frapp and we were both disappointed. It was a mistake to take them away not tea leaf and coffee bean are going to sell it you just watch!!!
Posted by: dancerdiaz | September 15, 2005 at 01:49 PM
The person who wrote about the difference between the US and Japan versions of the Green Tea Frap is correct. Japan has an authentic green tea taste but the US is watered down and sweeter. I guess they think Americans like more fat and sugar.
Posted by: | September 20, 2005 at 11:32 AM
does anyone know why the green tea frapp was dropped? why???
at first i thought it was just our local bernalillo, new mexico star bucks or just in new mexico. but why nationally?

I really like the green tea frap. As a matter of fact I'm addicted to it. Does anyone out there have the recipe? Virgina area is still making it for know but trying to plan ahead.

Starbucks iced green tea is more addictive than crack! WHAT do they put in this stuff? I personally think it tastes fantastic, a little earthy, a little fruity and a whole lot of thirst quenching. If someone has a recipe with storebought items, please pass it on as I'm spending my kids' inheritance on tea!
Posted by: Diane | October 06, 2005 at 01:36 PM
Does anyone on here who works at Starbucks actually have a recipe to make the green tea frap at home? I realize that it contains melon syrup and a green tea powder but does anyone know the exact brands of everything? Thanks.

It the wonderful Tazo® Green Tea Frappuccino has been discontinued. It was wonderful in it’s refreshingly un-coffeeness. I am torn in all things today as I have been told that my occasional indulgence is no more. I am outraged and saddened by this revelation. I morn today for its green cool succor at the end of this a long and tiring day.
If any one anywhere has the recipe to this highly sought-after delight. PLEASE email me

What brand of melon syrup do they use? I have some Matcha tea, but I am lacking the syrup! Halp! I need to feed my addiction! Everyone please e-mail Starbucks and demand the return of the green tea frap!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Jamie | October 13, 2005 at 11:50 PM
Most *$ syrups have a sku on the back to sell the syrup -- can't really remember the cost offhand nor can I remember if the melon syrup was saleable. I'd ask though because the melon syrup, as all other syrups, are made for and labeled with *$.
Funny you guys are mourning the GT frap. We still have the ingredients at my store and can't give it away. The baristas are all sick to death of it........we'd throw it away if we could. Kind of like that Alanis Morissete CD that's been playing nonstop in my store since it came out. I believe it met with a tragic end not too long ago......... :)

So I did not want to try the GTF until I learned that it had melon it (sounded so much more appealing!) Now I love them and they are not on the menu anymore! I have figured out that if I just ask that most places still have the stuff on hand though. BYW for people asking about the melon syrup Torani makes a MELON SYRUP!! I figure that it worth a try and I see that brand everywhere.

I love when people ask for the recipes. Here's how to make a GTF at home.
You will need:
Starbucks Matcha Tea Powder
Starbucks Melon Syrup
Starbucks Universal Beverage Base
Starbucks Iced Cup
Ice
(Optional) Whipped Cream
Fill cup to bottom green line with UBB
Add 2 (Tall), 3 (Grande), or 4 (Venti) scoops of Matcha powder into blender.
Add 2 (T), 3 (G), or 4 (V) pumps of Melon syrup to blender.
Pour UBB into blender.
Add ice using Grande volumetric scoop
Blend
Top with whipped cream if desired and enjoy.
Hope this helps...
Hahaha.

Okay, I've run out of matcha powder and my guests are still craving it. One guest found that Tazo makes a matcha with honeydew liquid. I know I can't make the drink with it but has anyone tried it and how close is it to what we serve or is it just tea bags... Anyone have any info... The closest I can find for a similar taste is green tea ice cream but even that's hard to find around here.
Posted by: | November 11, 2005 at 06:50 PM
I have the Tazo Match Tea liquid, and it makes an OK frap, but it needs the syrup. I have tried Torani Melon syrup. It is watermelon, so it is not quite the right flavor. Where can I get honeydew syrup? I found a site that sells honeydew powder. Think it will work?
Posted by: Jamie | November 13, 2005 at 04:24 PM
LOVE the Matcha Frap. However, I order it without any syrup but instead have a package of Splenda added to the drink. I think the syrup hides the wonderful flavor of the Matcha tea.
There is a powdered drink in Japan sold in grocery stores called Matcha Au Lait...yummy.

WHERE CAN I BUY STARBUCKS MELON SYRUP?????????????????????????????????????????????
Posted by: Jamie | November 27, 2005 at 01:23 AM
You can buy melon syrup at smart and final. Do you know where to buy UBB powder at?
Posted by: Stephanie | December 15, 2005 at 05:40 PM
You can buy Melon (or any flavor) syrup at your local Starbucks. Yes, we well our syrup. They're cheap too.
It is pretty much impossible to make your own UBB home. Replicating a real frap at home is nearly impossible. Even other coffe chains have difficulty with it.
