The Caribou coffee chain is giving away prizes including 1000 iTunes music downloads and 20 30GB iPods. The campaign launches on Monday with a morning of live music in several US stores. It doesn't sound like a threat to Starbucks to me. (Drinks Business Review)
I think it would be entireley appropriate if their single was the Pixies' Caribou.

Ummm...Who cares? Oh, wait! No one, you know why? Because Starbucks takes care of everyone.

Actually, I'd go for Caribou over Starbucks anyday.

"Arcapita, whose investors are located primarily in the Middle East , makes its investments in a manner consistent with the body of Islamic principles known as Shari’ah. Consequently, we operate our business in a manner consistent with Shari’ah principles and will continue to do so as long as Arcapita is a significant shareholder."

I doubt it's even on Starbucks' radar screen. ;-)

Anybody figure out how to win the game?

this is interesting:
"a Shari’ah-compliant company is prohibited from dealing in the areas of alcohol, gambling, pornography, pork and pork- related products."

That's strange, the Caribou that I go to almost every day (1350 S. Halsted - incidentally, probably the nicest, most genuine staff you will find in a large cafe) has been offering these game pieces with every drink for the last 3 weeks or so. I have a stack of my co-worker's pieces on my desk at work because you can only play once a day.

Shariah law is also what is being quoted as they begin plans to execute a man for trying to practice freedom of religion in Afghanistan.
All competition between coffee stores aside, in the end, the individuals making money of Caribou now are people who probably hate you, find your way of life morally repugnant and secretly wish more of us had died in the towers. I'm sure there are execeptions, but consider it when you spend your cash. Go to Dunkin Donuts if nothing else.

Read this: http://www.snopes.com/business/alliance/caribou.asp
Who would you rather your coffee dollars go to; these people or some white guys in Seattle? No contest, in my view.

Who wins the contest in your view out of curiousity? Snopes does nothing to dispell the facts that Caribou is now owned by those who support and follow Shariah law. A law which oppresses women, encourages violence (burned down a KFC lately?) and expresses views even more intolerant that our own religious right.

Caribou is a public company.
Ticker symbol: CBOU
