Joan Hair, 69, was thrilled with her free pound of coffee every week, the employee health and pension plan, and never pooh-poohed her $7.25-an-hour starting pay. A Starbucks customer saw how well she treated people and hired her for his firm, but Hair remains on call at Starbucks when they need someone to fill a shift. MY FAVORITE "OLDER" BARISTA ... is Lisa at the Main and McCormick Starbucks in Evanston. (She's nowhere near 69, though.) (Sacramento Bee)
Good for her!

thats shitty for u becca, ur supposed to get 1lb

Becca where in the world do you work? It's supposed to be 1lb of coffee as your mark out or a box of tea.
Oh and i have a question for anyone that can answer it... do customers who sit in the cafe for under an hour get a free refill or is there ALWAYS a $0.53 charge regardless? Just curious, me and my fellow partners can't agree...and if there is a free refill policy where can I find it in the books so that I can show other partners?

Are we talking about refils of coffee?? never heard of that....

There are no free refills. The refill policy is posted on the front of your POS along with the refund policy.

We always charge $0.50 for refills. There is no free hour that I am aware of...I also get a full pound a week...why only half a pound? Besides that, I can only hope to still be working somewhere as fun as SBUX at 69.

Read this weeks Scoop...refills are 50 cents, no time limit. Buy a cup in the morning and drink all day for 50 cents a cup. Until this week it was refills in one hour.

Hi there,
The refill policy USED to be 50 cents for any size coffe OR iced tea refill If you've stayed in the store and it has been an hour or less...Most stores in my area dont interrogate the customer-just give them a "refill" when they say they want one.
Today my manager told me that it was about to change ( at least in our district-So-Cal) to be more accomodating so no barista-nazis could insult customers by havng to ask how long they's been there etc.
Cheers!

Wow! I must say, that 69 year old barista is spot on the money when it comes to customer service. 80 percent of barista have a million other things on their mind and can't give the kind of service that man did. Kudos!
The refill policy is and always will be a "Just say Yes!" policy. You can always talk to the person and point the POS, but always give it to them then.

at my first store we had a older woman also named Joan, funnily enough. she's been with company for at least ten years (her number starts with something like 289).
i only hope a place like sbux will be around when i'm that age, since they're ain't gonna be no social security! :)

Yes Starbucks will be one of the few places that people can get benefits and a good wage. Yes, this weeks Scoop indicates a change policy and as I am always famous for saying, "Are you questioning my knowledge of Starbucks?" And the "Just Say Yes" policy applies in this situation. Would you rather sell the coffee or pour it down the drain after an hour?

Thanks guys...and I didn't know about the update in the scoop (seems my manager hides those, as well as our customer snapshots) I will pass on the information to my fellow baristas! :)
Posted by: CindyLou | July 11, 2006 at 02:43 PM
...and the scoop also has a warning on the cover to not mention anything in it outside of starbucks. good job, guys.

I copy the Scoop and keep a seperate archive with me in my apartment. It goes back about 3 years so it is very important.

cindylou: you can print them all yourself off the portal...
without your manager's say so.

We have always followed the just say yes on coffee and iced coffee but I'm wondering about the tea. Can anyone give me a heads up on the tea refill policy (particularly iced tea)?

I know of a 59 yo retired colonel, 2 war vet, and ROTC school teacher that started working at SBUX "for fun", to pass some time while caring for his father. He's a DM now. Shootin for that lb for life benefit.
