In Times Square, there's one Starbucks for every .04 square miles and for every 1,442 people
That's according to the new Foodio 54 Starbucks Saturation site. It also tells me that Downtown Chicago has one Starbucks for every 0.14 square miles and for every 2,411 people. Check your neighborhood.
I'm not sure if these stats are valid where zipcodes get real small. In Downtown DC, business district which includes the infamous K St. lobbyists there is a Starbucks every .05 sqare miles and 1 for each 635 people? I'm guessing that's based on population of people who live there, and not the working population during the day...

"In just the 68516 ZIP code (Lincoln, NE) there is one Starbucks for every 18.38 square miles and for every 32,776 people."
SAD!

The website doesn't seem to be able to find my zip code. :(

Kearns is right.
Their statistics are based on the number of people who live in the ZIP code based on census data.
So their statistics would be valid as far as the number of stores per square mile but way way off in terms of number of people.
ZIP codes in business areas in large cities can have 100 times or more people in the ZIP at any given time versus those who reside in the ZIP.
I would venture that there is one Starbucks per 25,000 people in the Times Square ZIP during an average business day counting both people who work there (there are a lot of tall office towers already there and more coming) and tourists (who are overflowing off the sidewalks all day long).

this is true, i work at one of those downtown chicago starbucks, and the area is much more business and tourist heavy than residential, so while a lot of people go through the area (and my store) only a small number of them actually live nearby. but even then, that number is ridiculously high.

I can't really help you with that, but the liscenced store in my college is run the same way. They will consistenly mess up drinks, not follow any rules, overcharge, that kind of stuff. I just like the design of the store itself, its nice to study there. I tend to bring my own food in and so do most other people. I don't know if starbucks has authority over them, but they are really rude and unprofessional.

I tried to visit the site to check on my zip code, but I'm at work and it was blocked because apparently the site is "dubious/unsavory." Now I'm REALLY curious to check when I get home!

In downtown Seattle (98101) there's one S'bux in every .01 sq. mi.

Mine says there are only 3 stores in Flagstaff, AZ(my town of 50,000 people).
I think they forgot the one in all three safeways, the one in barnes & noble, the one in target, and the one in the student union at NAU.

They should get customer snaphots still. If they have the starbucks logo they do have to follow all of starbucks policy. Are you sure they are licenced and they don't just "Proudly serve starbucks brand coffee"?
Posted by: Tyler | December 19, 2007 at 11:21 AM
i work in a proudly brewing starbucks store at my college, and we don't get those snapshot thingies. our rep also says we're th busiest cafe in the area- licenced sore or not- but my manager came from starbucks corperate, so everyhting is done like sbucks.. so no- the college stores don't get those- or at least WE don.t

Is it at all legit to be charged for water with a purchase? I was really thirsty, so I bought an Izze, then realized I wouldn't be able to recap it adequately, so I asked for a glass of water. The total seemed really high, so I asked for the receipt, and, lo and behold, they charged me for a grande coffee refill.
Is that corporate policy?
Posted by: Lilly | December 19, 2007 at 09:11 PM
You should absolutely not have been charged for water. If this was not a mistake by the barista, I'd involve management and customer relations as necessary. And you should definately ask for your money back.

Tyler, I am positive it is a licensed store. It is a Stop And Shop supermarket chain and they DO get snapshots(I recently recieved a 5-star 96% snapshot at my store). I think the DM is aware if the situation but I don't think she realizes how bad it really is. I think when the DM visits the store (usually in the morning or mid-day) there is someone who knows that they are doing on shift. The night kids are the ones who really don't know what they are doing.

Some Starbucks DO charge for water because their inventory comes out screwy if they don't. My store HAS to charge 60 cents per cup which is rang in as a refill. We DO keep regular cups under the register for customers who just want a cup of water not in a Starbucks cup all prettied up with the logo, cap, and straw.
Posted by: Tony | December 19, 2007 at 11:36 PM
There is a key to ring up a Cup 'O Water and it rings up as $0.00. This should be enough to keep track of inventory.

Very interesting. I work in the pioneer square neighborhood of Seattle (just south of the downtown core, though most people would call me downtown if you don't know the city) and per that website:
In just the 98104 ZIP code there is one Starbucks for every 0.07 square miles and for every 1,190 people.
That's also totally interesting about charging for water. The water in my building tastes not so good (which is weird for Seattle water) so I often walk to a nearby Starbucks, order a something (Cinnamon Dulce Latte is a fave) and get a venti water with it. I figure that if you pay over $3 for a coffee drink, that water should be free!
By the way, my office downtown is right on the edge of Seattle's downtown core (98101) and the Starbucks saturation is crazy!
In just the 98101 ZIP code there is one Starbucks for every 0.02 square miles and for every 360 people.
But I love it!
Btw, Seattle has a downtown (esp. if you include Belltown and Pioneer Square) where lots of people actually live, and it's not just a business area - at least in comparison to many other downtowns.

Here in Arizona, its state law to give free water. $10,000 fine if you don't...
Posted by: Tyler | December 20, 2007 at 10:48 AM
we've said no water without a purchase (unless we've run out of the bottled water) and we only give talls because the free water thing has been riduculously abused.

I'm so glad the philosophy of Ethos Water has rubbed off on Starbucks partners. Maybe, I'll make a point of letting you dehydrate sometime soon. That would truly be legendary. Or perhaps you're just so sick sociopath who lacks the ability to understand how other people feel in certain situations. Yes, I just let people have a free venti cup of water and ring it through using the cup o' water button on the POS. Thats why its there!
The bathroom, well thats a different story.

Like I said, we keep cups under our register for people who need a glass of water. There is a law that says we have to give free water also just not in our Starbucks cups. We buy a economy size bag of cups and use them. We don't give out our cups not for the sake of the missing cup but for the sake of not being short on cups and not losing money for that cup. At my store people abuse the priveledge also and that is another reason we had to switch over to the regular cups.

I was surprised to find that there are 79 in the two square mile radius of my home in downtown Toronto. Guess Canadians love Starbucks as much as everyone else!
