I was at my neighborhood Whole Foods recently when I noticed that the guy behind the fresh-fish counter was the same guy who served me coffee at Starbucks the day before. (He told me he worked two jobs because his wife was in grad school fulltime.) I also saw a barista who works days at a Starbucks I frequent waiting tables at a restaurant next door to that SBUX at night. Are you dealing with two jobs, too? DISCUSS THIS or anything-else Starbucks-related in the Open Thread.
This is not rare. While my wife was going to school, I was the opening shift from 5:30 to 1, and then I would work at a day care from 3 to 6:30. Long days. But then I used my college degress to get a much better paying job and left the sbux.

I'm planning on working 2 jobs this summer. One of them possibly being Starbucks. Can't wait............../sarcasm

I guess it's not how many jobs we work, but how happy we are with the ones we do work. In NYC, I was making pretty decent money as a manager in a high volume store and was miserable. At the time, I thought Starbucks was the end-all, be-all, that I could never do anything else with my english degree. The treatment by the NY Metro team was horrendous at best. So, I walked out one night. Put the money in the safe, left, and never turned back to bat an eye. I didn't abandon anyone, I saved myself. Now, I am working on a PhD and am a college professor.
You all can do so much better than what Starbucks says they offer you. There is a whole world out there, experience it!

Yes, I'm a college grad (w/career experience- not just fresh from school)shift @ Sbux & hold another job at another company- work at each one a min of 25 hrs each week.
I'm the only partner in my store who does this- but I'm also the only one who doesn't live with parents or a spouse- is self supporting.
I'm very thankful to live close to both locations, have managers who give me doable schedules, and that both positions are with companies that provide health benefits, 401k, vacation, etc.
In today's economy, I've very grateful for both my jobs- I know I'm not the only one who works two. I also know what it's like to be unemployed.
However, I'm also very exhausted just trying to make ends meet and wish one day Sbux will pay a true livable wage for all partners (even if I'm not still working there).
And yes, :) I see almost all my regular Sbux customers at my other job too- the cross over is welcome and I feel it is a plus to my customer service at both. It adds small smiles during my long days when they ask for me at both places (b/c they count on me to be there and take care of them) and gives me more to converse/connect with them.

I am a Starbucks store manager and I work another job about 15 hours a week. Before I was an SM, I worked as a shift lead about 40 hours a week because I had a lazy manager and I would work about 30 hours a week at my other job.
A usual day was 5:45a-1pm (starbucks) and 3p-9p (other job).
Very usual for baristas to have two jobs and very exhausting physically and emotionally when both jobs are customer service.
Moral of the story: Be nice to your barista cause their lives suck.

Almost all baristas and shifts either a) has a second job, b) is in school and has their wages subsidized by student loas c) gets money (or a free place to stay) from family (such as parents or spouse), or d) receives some sort of public assistance, or some combination of any of those.
I somehow manage to make it by only working at the bux. We live in a small apartment, shared with my partner. We have no children. She has a crappy car that she paid cash for a few years ago, with student loan money. I have no car, but help with her insurance. Everything we own is old, crappy, and on the verge of falling apart. We buy almost nothing new.
Am I thankful to have a job in this economy? No. I really don't think I need to be thankful when there are people like Howard Schulz making millions off the rest of our backs. I recognize that there are people much worse off than I am. I am glad I am not worse off. But I will not be thankful to a company that does pay enough for baristas and shifts to thrive as human beings, that does not pay enough for me to have even consider having children, that hasn't made cost of living adjustments to its wage structure in 3 or more years, that has the audacity to call us all partners then turn right around and lay off 12,000 "partners" plus eliminate thousands more jobs through attrition, that then gives the CEO a BONUS for doing so, and the list goes on.
Like I said, I'm glad, sure, but thankful? Who exactly am I supposed to be thankful to? Starbucks doesn't thank me for going without, so it can achieve record profits.

Funny I was just thinking about this the other day. When I first started out at The Bux a couple years ago I could honestly say that not one of my co-workers had two jobs. Now? Almost every barista/shift/asm and even manager has another job.
Personally I try and work 35+hours at The Bux and I do pet/house sitting on the side. Seriously thinking about getting another job as well. But what do you expect when your raise ever 6 months is 11 cents!

More lunacy from California. God, I hate that state. Ready to brew coffee causes cancer!!!!
Committee for Education and Research on Toxics (CERT) filed a Proposition 65 enforcement action alleging that ready-to-brew coffee exposes coffee drinkers to acrylamide (a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer).

I work two jobs - one non-insurable, non-extensible contract (full-time) and the Bux on evenings and weekends. Commuting is very stressful as I still don't earn enough to afford a car, and my jobs are located 20K apart. Yes, I am always tired. It's life.
(FYI - I have two university degrees and 10 years of white-collar work experience.)

If Starbucks should pay a living wage, then so should all minimum wage jobs (fast food retail, etc.), and then the minimum wage would be through the roof...

Yep.
I'm working two jobs: SBUX full-time and the other one part-time.

Time To GO! is absolutely correct about the NY area. I worked at a store in the Midwest before moving to a NYC (midtown high volume, high tourist area) store. I have discovered the same as Time To GO! At least in my district, the Starbucks management is money hungry and treats baristas less-than-human. I only stay there for the great health insurance and the forced flexibility they have given me to work my other job part time that I'm hoping goes full time in a few weeks.

NY Barista:
Sorry to tell you this, but if you were actually treated "less-than-human" you wouldn't have a cushy job (compared to what actual people in poverty around the world probably have to do) and certainly wouldn't have health benefits, etc.

Im not usually on till..thankfully, it repulses me to think of all of the germs on both paper and plastic currency.
Posted by: javagirl666 | May 30, 2011 at 04:45 PM
Here's my thought about germs. They are everywhere and there is no avoiding them. As long as you don't lick the counter, you should be fine. It's like my deal with toilet seat covers. Are you going to lick your butt? The answer is usually no. So, why do people need them. Oprah said that the cleanest part of a person's body is their rear. GERMS are everywhere, people, get used to it.
It's my philosophy and I rarely get sick.

Most partners I know work two or more jobs, and/or go to school full time. Thankfully, the pay I brought home from Starbucks was disposable income, although I did work a second job my first year with SBUX. I had wanted to make extra money that summer, but my hours got cut at both jobs so it really did not benefit me.

So this is the first time to post, and this thread is one I can not pass..The wages are not livable. When I asked about raising the starting wage to attract a better hiring pool, my regional director looked at me as if I was crazy. We do pay a good rate!
Second I just finished Howards book, very transparent. EXCEPT no where did he talk about cutting labor to make the shareholders happy. Having record earnings and telling us recently at his book tour, we cant give you back the labor, coffee prices have risen!. Well that was just recently. We have been stressed out and over worked for 2.5 years.

I work two gigs, I work at Starbucks(At least for another 3 weeks, I'm moving on), and I wait tables at a restaurant in the same shopping center. Combine that with grad school, and it's a tough haul.
That said, it's nice to know that you can support yourself, and you have a little extra spending money.

I haven't posted on here in a long time, but this topic definately made me want to post! I am a supervisor at a store in a south chicago suburb. I work 40 hours a week at my store, almost always the 5am shift. Sometimes I get off at 2 and go straight to my second job at 3. Its a part time job, but I don't get off until 9pm and then I get up at 4am the next day and do it all over again. I do that a few days a week! The sbux benefits are great, but the pay is not enough to live off of! As a home owner, that second job is a life saver!!

I work two jobs (one sbx obviously) plus a volunteer position. Im also at least full time in college each semester. im exhausted and miserable, and still can't afford to pay my rent too often to feel okay with.
I have coworkers who live off gov't assistance, work part time and have school paid for by the state. at the end of the year they get about twice my tax return.
in the U.S. hard work does not pay off. getting this job was the worst thing i ever did. not only i will graduate with 60k in student loans after years of stress and despair but meanwhile my peers will graduate with higher marks (unlimited study time!), less stress and ZERO in loans. hard work DOES NOT pay.

@shift.misto: sounds like you need to spend more time studying and less time complaining about the plight of the nation and how you got screwed over. Man up and get over it.

I've worked for Starbucks for going on six years and at one point carried two jobs but my manager at the time defeated the purpose of me having two jobs and cut my hours down almost as a penalty for me not giving 100% available time. Its critical for me to have benefits due to a chronic illness but with fighting for hours and my pay having never gone much higher then $10 an hour (remember, six years and counting...) I've honestly had to dip into my vacation time to make ends meet when I get sick and can't work to ensure I meet the required 20 hours per week for benefits and then money to afford a life with medical bills and going to school. It always makes me sad to see my vacation time get used for everything but a vacation, and I've seen this true for many of my fellow partners. I'll tell you one thing, if there is anything one can do for their local barista is tip them. To many that tip money is their saving grace for whatever they need for themselves by the end of the week. Oh, and be nice to them, they have to smile all day even if outside those happy Starbucks doors their life isn't so nice (or even inside Starbucks). It gets psychologically draining. Maybe someday Starbucks will open a blind eye and see that many partners are not just high school kids looking for a summer buck, but young mothers and fathers, college adults paying their own tuition and rent... you name it, they all work for Starbucks. Now, I must go to work sick with a cold because I can't afford not to.

regardless of your opinion of my time management skills, did you tell me to stop worrying about my country, man up, and get over it? YOU sir are the reason why the weak of mind are so valued. because YOU, don't mind being used, and lied to, and made into a puppet show for your laughing gov't, raking in the cash from your flesh. If you want to toss insults at my busy schedule than feel free to waste your time, I still don't see a punchline in working my ass off for less reward than my lazy coworkers. But if you think you are going to defend the choices of the madly corrupt system you so blissfully worship save the BS for someone who will beleive you. ..and come up with a better response than "study more".

I work around 12 hrs/wk as a barista in addition to a full-time job in a different field. I'm over 30, single, childless, and have a bachelor's degree. I've been doing this for almost 5 years now. I work 4 10-hour shifts at my full-time job so I am able to work at Sbux while still working no more than 10 hrs/day and 6 days/week. A second job lets me avoid a paycheck to paycheck existence. For now, it's worth it. I'd miss my customers if I left.
Working 2 jobs is pretty common among baristas. One of my coworkers is an immigrant from West Africa and between his barista job and his job at Whole Foods, he was able to save enough money to bring his wife and two young children to the US early last year. Their third child was born a few months ago...and who knows, he could grow up to be President. This man's story is a perfect foil for my inner cynic.
Posted by: Maggie | June 05, 2011 at 05:16 PM
Most baristas work 2 jobs. Who can live on 9-11$per hour? even if you work 40 hrs. per week - you can get about 1600$ per month gross... so you should spend about 1/3 of your pay on rent to not go completely broke - thats about $500 per month. If you live in a metropolitan area - that's nearly impossible to find. Plus subtract taxes, food, utilities, etc... You always live paycheck to paycheck unless you find roommates and get an apartment in a crappy neighborhood (talking about Chicago - don't know living standards anywhere else). So even if you have a full time job at Starbucks, you will not be able to afford a decent apartment in a decent area that's even remotely close to your store (most stores are downtown... good luck finding a place there for $500)
But I am so glad Howard got that raise... Starbucks is there for me as a last resort since I have experience and actually work when on shift. But it has never paid enough to live on .
And yes, there are worse things out there in the third world. But i live here and now, in Chicago - and I can't afford it. As horrible as third world issues are, I can't afford to live in my first world.
NOW compare inflation to your raises - then subtract about 30% from your earnings. The dollar is not even worth that much anymore.
But good thing Howard got a raise. We should all be thankful and stuff...

So many are posting about not being able to live on the wages Starbucks pays but think about the work. It's an entry level position in food service, like that of a clerk at a clothing store, counter person at WAWA or a restaurant worker. Before you blast the post about everything a barista does, I work at Starbucks too so I know everything you do. You want high level pay for a job which is open to 16 year olds in high school with no experience. Everything we do is taught in store and doesn't require any special education. Think globally, if every fast food restaurant, clothing retailer, ect, paid great wages..the cost would come across to the price of goods and your cheeseburger would be $5, your simple t shirt would be $40 and our latte's would have to be $7. Realize what the job is....a entry level job that was never meant to support you through life but just to get you started in the workforce.
Posted by: just an sbux worker | June 07, 2011 at 09:52 AM
The thing is that if i worked in fast food where everything is automated and you just have to press a button and have food appear that would be fine, i would expect that kind of wage.
But the image starbucks is showing out there is not of unskilled fast food. Granted it's what is becoming slowly and surely... But we are trained to multi-task, make espresso, comment on the latest coffee promotion, It's not a low skilled job and I have never seen a 16 year old hired there.... Maybe your store is different and hires morons I don't know.
Starbuck's coffee beverages are over priced to begin with under the disguise of quality - i think there is room for a raise.
And before you say coffee prices went up, dont you think Starbucks bought some ahead of price? Ever heard of futures?
Starbucks is not a low skill job. It is not brain surgery but it is no push button operation. And if Howard wants to maintain a gourmet coffee feel, he needs to pay gourmet salaries as well.
Posted by: alex | June 09, 2011 at 11:19 PM
@ alex if you do work there you'll realize it isn't completely low skilled but on the lower end. How do you get an espresso shot..do you tamp a shot or push a button. How do you blend a frap..push a button...how do you steam milk...push a button (801 machine). Yes you're trained to multi task but so is a fast food worker. Starbucks used to be gourmet and high scale but if you work in a store that does $30000 plus a week like mine you realize the only way to get it done is implement the lean thinking, repeatable routines and such that has come out by the company. Just the names of those terms should clue you in....lean thinking (don't think for yourself) repeatable routine (be a robot). What other business use this model....oh yeah..fast food. No our store doesnt hire 16 year olds but what im saying is they are eligible for the job which means starbucks also understands that the job CAN be done by someone with no skill or experience. Just curious why you think a 16 yr old is automatically a moron. Did you skip that age in life since you appear to be so wise? Trust me I know the barista job isn't easy, never said it was, but all you have to bring to the table is the ability to multi-task and the rest is taught in about a week and a half. I never said anything about coffee prices either so your talk of futures is pointless. Futues is something you buy from a large conglomerate of coffee growers, starbucks mostly deals with small farms and pays directly cutting out the middle man so farmers can get more from our purchase. Too bad you don't know much about company ops but thats how it is.
Posted by: just an sbux worker | June 11, 2011 at 07:52 AM
"starbucks mostly deals with small farms and pays directly cutting out the middle man so farmers can get more from our purchase." That is awesome. I mean that, I really appreciate this fact. Too bad however, that Starbucks does it not because Howard cares about coffee farmers in Africa or Latin America but because Howard wants it coffee to have big "FairTrade" label on it so it attracts more customers. Too bad as well, that Howard does not fair trade with his baristas. Why paying decent money for the coffee beans to the farmers but not doing this in relation to baristas?

Starbucks job is NOT ideal for University Students. Working as a security guard at a construction site however is. The reason is because Starbucks will NOT give you the perk of the invaluable freedom to do your studies on the clock. This means that you could put more hours at a security guard job where you could often study as much as 90% of your work time on a quiet site and get paid as good or even slightly BETTER than being a starbucks barrista. Now you will NOT get free coffees from Starbucks as a security guard and now must pay full price, but the homework option is worth sacrificing the free coffees.
